Selections from the Alice Operetta Part II: Looking-Glass
May 30, 2026 , 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT
Noon PDT / 3:00 PM EDT / 8:00 PM UK

Join Matt Demakos with more explorations into Walter Slaughter’s original score for the Alice Operetta! This talk will concentrate on the Looking-Glass act of the 1886 Alice in Wonderland operetta. Matt gave Part I of this talk at the 100th meeting of the LCSNA in Winston-Salem in November 2025, where he discussed the music for the Wonderland act. Though this talk will discuss many aspects of the music, it will emphasize how the music informs us what was taking place on the stage, that is, what Lewis Carroll himself had seen when he took his seat in the first-row balcony.
Matthew Demakos (he/him) has been writing on various topics relating to the life and works of Lewis Carroll for the last twenty-five years. Though he writes on various topics (such as Carroll’s shyness, the poem “Hiawatha Photographing,” the true ages of Carroll’s child friends, Alice’s height in Wonderland, and the chess moves in Looking-Glass), he has written several articles on John Tenniel’s artwork for the Alice books, making it a specialty. More recently, he has specialized in the 1886 operetta Alice in Wonderland: A Musical Dream Play. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and three children.
