Content of Potential Interest to the Society

The Lewis Carroll Society of North America (LCSNA, or the Society) publishes or supports the publication of:

a. Scholarly Works. The Society publishes peer-reviewed books that present original scholarship. All books must be approved by the LCSNA Publications Committee and the Board of Directors.  Editorial decisions are made following rigorous, fair, and timely peer review.

b. General, Popular or General Interest Works. The Society may publish non-scholarly books and monographs that are expected to be of general interest to members and others interested in children’s literature, fantasy, mathematics, or other areas related to the works of Carroll, but normally the Society does not produce new works of fiction or new editions of previously published works by Carroll.

Author Responsibilities

  • Authors submitting a book for consideration must warrant that the work is original and does not infringe upon the intellectual property rights or other rights of any individual or entity.
  • Authors must secure all permissions to include copyrighted material in their work, and to provide any other information required by the editorial office such as disclosures of conflicts of interest or funding sources.
  • The LCSNA supports and encourages our authors’ own efforts to promote and disseminate their works. Our policies enable authors to use their works after publication in their scholarship, teaching, and research activities.
  • Authors must submit a pre-acceptance version of the manuscript before the Society will make a final commitment to publish. Once the Society commits to publish a book, the author must submit a final manuscript.

Author Submission Guidelines: Book Proposal Template

Authors who may be interested in submitting a proposal for consideration by the Society should respond to all of the questions below, and submit the form at pubs@lewiscarroll.org

1. Content

  • Anticipated length (expressed in word or page count).
  • A brief abstract (250 words or less) describing the topic the book will explore.
  • Is this book intended to be a comprehensive treatment of the topic, or will it focus on specific subtopics?
  • Place the proposed book in context to previous research related to this topic. (If possible, provide a few citations to specific works covering similar territory in the past.)
  • Explain how the book will address an important need in the field, what will make this new book unique, or new and interesting insights the book will provide.

2. Readership

  • What is the intended readership, e.g., Is the book intended to be scholarly or an accessible treatment of general interest?
  • Is this a specialized text primarily of interest within the Carrollian world? If there is a potential audience beyond the Carrollian world, describe the audience and why the book will be of interest?
  • Why will this book matter now to the intended readership?

3. Illustrative Material

  • If there will be illustrative material, describe its nature and purpose (e.g., examples of title pages, illustrations from previous books)
  • Tell us whether this book be highly illustrated or will only contain a relatively few representative images? (If possible, provide an approximate number of illustrations.)
  • Will the images be in color, black-and-white, or both?
